Biographie :

William Bevan Harris, dit Billy Bevan, d’origine australienne comme son collègue Snub Pollard, naquit en effet à Orange (Nouvelle-Galles du Sud) le 29 septembre 1887.
Après des études à l’université de Sydney, il effectue son apprentissage de comédien à la Pollard Opera Company tout comme le futur Beaucitron. Il émigre ensuite aux États-Unis, débute au cinéma chez L-KO Universal en 1916, et en 1920 entre chez Mack Sennett; il lui restera fidèle jusqu’au début du parlant (vers 1930), tant que durera la mode des "shorts". Chez Sennett, il est d’abord le partenaire de Louise Fazenda jusqu’en 1921. Puis, en 1922, il tourne en vedette une série avec Mildred lune; à partir de 1924, il fait équipe avec Madeline Hurlock et Andy Clyde et enfin avec Vernon Dent jusqu’en 1929. À une exception près (The Quack Doctor, 1920), il semble ne pas participer à la mise en scène. Enfin, jusqu’à sa mort, le 26 novembre 1957 à Escondido (Californie), il incarnera des seconds rôles dans de nombreux longs métrages.

Billy Bevan ne semble pas être connu en France sous un sobriquet original : le plus souvent, c’était tout simplement "Billy". Cependant- dans les copies 9,5 distribuées par Pathé, il était baptisé "Oscar". Ce petit homme un peu rondouillard joue souvent chez Sennett les rôles tenus chez Hal Roach par son compatriote Snub Pollard. Comme lui, il porte généralement la moustache, mais celle-ci, courbée en demi-cercle, ne dépasse pas la ligne supérieure du menton. Coiffé du classique melon, il est pourtant moins élégant que Beaucitron: sa silhouette plus ramassée lui donne une allure plus prolétarienne. Nous allons montrer que ce clown imprévisible est un produit typique de l’école Sennett: dynamique, inventif, il se montre particulièrement à l’aise dans les poursuites merveilleusement réglées par Del Lord ou Alf Goulding et au cours desquelles il conserve un très relatif sang-froid.
